Medicare, VA care, and TRICARE For Life.

How Medicare can work alongside the coverage you earned. General education only, not VA benefits advice.

Medicare alongside VA health care

VA health care and Medicare are separate programs, and they do not coordinate benefits the way some insurance does. VA generally covers care you get at VA facilities or care that VA authorizes. Medicare can help cover care you choose to get outside the VA.

Many veterans enrolled in VA health care also enroll in Medicare for flexibility: seeing doctors outside the VA, getting care while traveling, or having options if VA eligibility or priority changes.

If you delay Part B, a late enrollment penalty may apply if you sign up later. That is worth weighing carefully.

TRICARE For Life

TRICARE For Life is coverage for TRICARE eligible military retirees and family members who have Medicare. It generally requires both Medicare Part A and Part B.

With TRICARE For Life, Medicare usually pays first for services both programs cover, and TRICARE For Life pays second. Keeping Part B active is key to keeping TRICARE coverage.

Always confirm your own situation directly with TRICARE before making changes.
