Your Initial Enrollment Period runs seven months: three before your birthday month, that month, and three after.
Born on the 1st? Medicare counts your birthday as the month before, so the window shifts one month earlier. Confirm with Social Security.
Before you decide
Coverage through work? If you or your spouse are still working with employer coverage, your timing may be different.
Have TRICARE? TRICARE For Life generally requires Parts A and B, so plan your Part B start carefully.
Use VA care? VA care continues either way. Medicare adds options outside the VA.
Avoid penalties. Missing your window can mean Part B or Part D penalties that last as long as you have coverage.
